An editor contract is an agreement between a writer and an editor that governs the editing process. It usually covers the scope of work, the word count, the type of editing (copyediting, developmental editing, proofreading, etc.), the remuneration (payment), and other aspects. Having it is important to eliminate confusion and give both parties confidence.
Strictly speaking, this work can be done without a written agreement. But not having a freelance editor contract puts both parties at risk, as an author could get results that are different from what they hoped for and the editor could get stifled on payment. A contract gives both of them a measure of protection.

The following articles are the full legal terms of this editor contract.
Editor shall be considered an independent contractor for the purposes of this contract. Editor will carry out the tasks outlined in this contract in consideration of timely payment from Client. Client shall have no right or responsibility towards Editor as an employee at any time.
Both parties agree not to solicit one another or each other’s employees to leave their respective positions at any time.
Any creative works or other intellectual property created under the scope of this editor contract shall be the sole intellectual property of [Client.Company]. Editor shall make no claims otherwise at any point. Editor reserves the right to use samples of completed work for marketing purposes or as part of a portfolio.
Editor will issue an electronic invoice via email once every 30 days. Client agrees to pay each invoice within 15 days of receipt. Any late payments will be subject to a late fee equal to 10% of the total invoiced amount, and shall be included on subsequent invoices.
